It’s Complicated by Missy Johnson

They call him the Anaconda, and I’m pretty sure it isn’t because he likes snakes.

Nick Jenson is my neighbor. My hot, oh-so-sexy, very-well-equipped neighbor that I’d spend hours watching from the safety of my bedroom window.

I saw lots of things I probably shouldn’t have. Sometimes I’d touch myself, imagining it were his hands roaming over my body instead of my own. I had just one mission—to find out if the rumors were true.
Then one day, he caught me watching him.

I was mortified. I was prepared to quit college, move to another country, and live the rest of my life saying, “Nick who?” But, apparently, life had other ideas.

Because Nick? Well, he isn’t just my neighbor … He’s also my father’s best friend. If I thought things were difficult before, they were about to get a whole lot more complicated.

Oh, and those rumors? Holy fuck, were they true …

 Christina’s 3 Star Review

Anna, and every other woman in existence, seems to lust after Nick, a widower with two young children. His next door neighbor is his best friend and his daughter, Anna, has babysat Nick’s kids and has a great relationship with the family. That doesn’t stop her from fantasizing the considerably older Nick, especially given that the gossip of her university’s single women is that he’s packing…so much that he’s called “Anaconda”. Anna wants to see for herself, and she gets that opportunity, but not after having been caught watching Nick get out of the shower half clothed to begin with.

The two begin an illicit, taboo affair that no one seems to care much about. Her father is rarely home and the only one she really answers to is her best friend, Kayla. Anna begins to spend more and more time with Nick and his family and soon their relationship becomes about more than just sex. There are real feelings involved, however there is one major roadblock in the way of happiness…her father. Just what will he do when he finds out that his best friend and daughter have fallen in love?

It’s Complicated is a fun, quick read. It is told in the first person from both Anna and Nick’s points of view. It can easily be read in one setting and is nice and steamy. While the story is enjoyable, it is not without its faults.

One big beef I had with the story is that there seems to be some inconsistency with just how long Nick and Anna have known each other. They make references to when Anna was in school, when she babysat, when Nick and his family moved in, and they all seem to change the timeline of just how long they’ve known each other. I also didn’t see much of a “best friend” type of relationship between Nick and Anna’s father, which I think would have made for a more interesting plot, giving it some much needed angst (and I’m not one that is much into angst, this story just seemed to lack substantial plot and direction).

I know this was meant to be a short read, but I can’t help but think that if it was just a little more developed that the story would be more cohesive. I liked the characters, especially Anna’s innocence and awkwardness, but I really wish that her relationships with secondary characters, namely her father, were more developed.

I love a good taboo May/December romance and this one scratched that itch. Fans of this trope will love this one.
