She was the first good thing that ever happened to me. The only person who made me want to stay put. Until she disappeared. My name is Adam Kincaid, and I’m the most daring freelance photographer in the world. Or, at least, I used to be. After losing my parents way too young, I hid behind a camera lens—and discovered a talent that took me all over the planet. No assignment was too dangerous, no location too remote, no subject too painful.

Then came the accident, and the hospital, where I met her: Alexandra Robbins. My nurse. My savior. With her fiery red hair and crystal-clear blue eyes, the most striking woman I could’ve imagined—and the kindest too. How could such a big personality fit into such a petite package? But she was running from something too, something I never had: her family. She thought she’d escaped their control. But she was wrong. And now they’ve taken her away from me.

Today is her engagement party. I may not get an explanation, but I’ll be damned if I don’t get a photograph. A picture really is worth a thousand words. And just like love, it never fades away.

Julie’s 3.5 Star Review

Sometimes it takes meeting a complete stranger who sees us in a different light to change our perception of life. That’s what happened for Alexandra. Alex, as her friends call her, isn’t living her best life. She allows her life to be largely dictated by her parents. Alex couldn’t be more different from her parents. They are controlling, insensitive, blind to her wants and needs and emotionally abusive.

Adam is a free bird. He lives a life that flirts with danger and he absolutely loves it. He loves it even more when that danger lands him in the ER under the care of a sassy nurse that he just can’t get enough of. The connection between the Alex and Adam is immediate and intense.

Alex finds strength she never knew with Adam in her life and the two change together. Their goals in life change, their needs and wants change, and most importantly their priorities change to focus on each other.

“I think you’re brave and wonderful. I also think you’re finally getting to the point you need to do this—it’s time you live for you.” I paused. “I didn’t know Ollie, but I think he’d want that for you.” She curled into me, her head burrowed in my chest, and I held her tight, knowing she needed my closeness and support. She’d needed that for a long time. I’d give it to her freely and without question.”

However they underestimated the people in Alex’s life that stand to lose something if they lose her. They go to great lengths and test their bond immensely to try to get their way. Will they succeed, or can adam’s love help his nightingale find her way back to him?

“If my being gone meant they relaxed enough to bring Ally back here, then I could still do this. She wasn’t lost to me yet. I was waiting in the coffee shop when she walked in the next morning. She looked a little better and offered me a sad smile as she sat down. “I can’t stay long, I’m afraid.”

I really liked Alex and Adam together. I thought that Alex was a likable character despite her situation being one that would indicated her being weak and vulnerable. She finds strength in having Adam by her side. I did feel like he could have taken a backseat a bit more and let her shine in her own. I always root for women to be their own saviors and wished that for Alex. Adam and Alex’s connection was intense and sometimes the intensity of it seemed a bit over the top. I loved the photography aspect of the story and the really interesting little bits we got to hear about of Adam’s assignments. Overall I really enjoyed the story, even got lost in it a time or two. I will definitely read more by this author in the future.
