Next To Never By Penelope Douglas

Title: Next To Never (Fall Away, #4.5)

Author: Penelope Douglous

Genre: New Adult

Release Date: January 17, 2017

New York Times bestseller Penelope Douglas introduces Quinn, younger sister to Jared, Madoc, and Jaxon, in the latest novella in the series that began with Jared and Tate in Bully….

Quinn Caruthers has several problems.

Her father, Jason, and her three older brothers, Jared, Madoc, and Jaxon.

Under the close watch of the men in her family, Quinn has found it nearly impossible to spread her wings—or even date—without them jumping in to hover. And when a family friend—several years older—from her childhood captures her heart, she knows they’re going to be a problem. Lucas Morrow is a man—experienced, sophisticated, and important. And knowing her brothers, he may as well be forbidden.

But Lucas left town years ago and shows no signs of returning. Quinn knows she shouldn’t wait for him anymore.

But then a package turns up on her doorstep with no return address and its contents reveal family secrets that threaten to turn Quinn’s world upside down. She’s never asked about the tumultuous path of her parents’ romantic history, but she soon learns their happy marriage had a very rocky and passionate start.

As she begins to see things around her with new eyes, Quinn will have to make tough choices about whether she’ll keep waiting…or finally go after what she really wants.

Mary’s 5 Star Review

The Fall Away series is one that stays with you long after you have read it. I was sad when it ended, but wait Penelope Douglas the angel who I adore decides to continue with a second generation. Like is it Christmas? It certainly felt like it. Reading it was like getting together with old friends whom you haven’t seen in a long time. It was a prequel within a new story, and genius. She gave me a story I knew I was dying for (Quinn) and then one I didn’t even know I wanted (Quinn, Madoc, and Jared’s parents). I loved every minute of it.

You will need to read the previous books for sure. There are a lot of different couples that have a history. If you haven’t gotten through the entire series this book is full of spoilers. The book sets up the new series, you will definitely be interested in the new characters (the kids) dynamics. They are so much like their parents, and I fell hard for one in particular. It also was a coming of age for Quinn, and a understanding of where she comes from, and who she wants to be. I enjoyed watching her grow in a very short time and blossom into a woman was a nice.

The synopsis is a little misleading, and this isn’t just all about her, but her parents, and their love story. I can’t go into the details without spoiling the series, but I will say it will make you laugh, want to pull your hair out, and even cry. The message love is never easy, but a love that transcends years, and tribulations, is one you hang on to, never let go of. I expect Quinn to go through the same type of love.

Thank you Penelope for bringing us back to Fall Away Lane, I wish I lived on the house on the corner, because I never want to leave. I can’t wait for where you take us with this new generation.

Meagan’s Spoilerish Review

The author has stated several times that Next To Never is a transitional novella that sets up the next generation of the Fall Away family. It features Quinn Caruthers but it is not her story, she will be getting her own book later. Even going in knowing this I fully expected to love Next To Never just like I have every other book in the series. Unfortunately, this book wasn’t for me.

I know this is a transitional novel but to me it felt totally unnecessary. It was like fan fiction – the characters were the same but the storyline has no effect on the original, or upcoming, storyline. The “Extra,” The Next Generation on Douglas’ website sets up future novels just as well as Next To Never and it’s free.

The synopsis for Next To Never made me think it would set up Quinn and Lucas’ relationship but that’s a bit inaccurate. Yes, there is mention of them growing up together but the novella focuses more on the weird package/book Quinn receives. The book ends up being *SPOILER* the story of her parent’s relationship. I guess it was nice to know how Katherine and Jason met but an entire novella devoted to their relationship felt unnecessary. Quinn’s family loves to walk all over her, taking advantage of her kind demeanor whenever it suits them (Which was another problem I had with the story. Seeing all my favorite characters act like assholes wasn’t fun.). The book about Kat and Jase is supposed to spur Quinn into taking control or her life. Which she did at the end so I guess there’s that.

I feel like a jerk writing this review, but I really didn’t care for this novella. Please remember that this is only my opinion, lots of other readers will love this book which is awesome! And just because I didn’t like Next To Never doesn’t mean I’m not going to be first in line to grab Douglas’ next book. I’m still excited to get more of my favorite crew in the upcoming Fall Away books.
