Review: Clipped Wings by Helena Hunting

Clipped Wings

Their body art is hot. Their chemistry is even hotter.

From her dark hair sweeping below her waist to her soft, sexy curves, Tenley Page intrigues tattoo artist Hayden Stryker in a way no one else ever has…especially when she asks him to ink a gorgeous, intricate design on her back. Yet for all her beauty, there is something darkly tragic and damaged about Tenley that Hayden is everything.

Covered in ink and steel, Hayden is everything Tenley has never dared to want, awakening a desire to explore more than the art adorning his stunning body. Trapped by a past that leaves her screaming from nightmares, Tenley sees Hayden as the perfect escape. Although he has secrets too, if they both keep themselves guarded perhaps their intense physical connection will remain only that.

But nothing, not even passion, can keep them safe from their pasts…

Natalie’s 4 Star Review

Cupcakes, tattoos, kittens, guilt, pain, love and sex.  Clipped Wings had it all.

Two people horribly broken suffering from not just loss but from unbearable guilt. Walls are put up, loneliness ensues and nothing will make it better, not sex, not drugs, nothing. Well, except for maybe the right person.

I first began Tenley and Haydens story in Cupcakes and Ink, the prequel novella (see my review here) and I was really surprised how much I wanted to know theses two characters even with very little information disclosed. I was instantly intrigued to learn more and find out how their relationship would develop. I was equally surprised by how much I continued to allow Tenley and Heyden to consume my mind while reading Clipped Wings.

Tenley’s has lost everything, her loss so unimaginable in my mind I cringe just at the thought. She moves to Chicago to work on her Master Degree and to leave behind the painful memories. Working part-time in an antique store she cant help but take notice of the tattoo shop across the street. Most specifically she can’t seem to stop watching one very sexy employee who also happens to be the nephew of the antique store owner.

Hayden also takes notice of the shy skittish girl who is now working in his aunts antique shop. He is equally drawn to her but has issues of his own. A rough past with bad decisions that don’t seem to want to stay in the past.  Trying to control now what he couldn’t control then has led to a life of OCD, guilt and self blame.

“But like me, he was closed off; his tattoos formed his walls. I knew all about walls. I had built my own.”

The relationship that these two characters form was really beautiful. It was slow and tentative, both afraid but wanting it so much.  I loved that Helena Hunting took her time and didn’t rush anything. I think that disclosing too much too soon in the story would have done theses characters a disservice. By holding off I really felt the pain, the ups and downs and the love. Clipped Wings was uniquely mesmerizing, like reading a book shrouded in grey skies. I can only hope that in Inked Armor (Clipped Wings #2) Tenley and Hayden will finally find what they are searching for.

“The damage was so profound on both sides. I worried we might never reach a middle ground where we could find freedom from out pasts.”
